The Little Drummer Boy
Some of you know by now that is one of my names for Evan,
our little drummer boy.I also know
that I may be crazy for encouraging my son who is now a year and half old to
play the drums. Jus the other night we went out to dinner and as usual Evan
found a way to entertain himself. He had two drinking straws and was playing
along with the mariachi music in the Mexican restaurant that we favor. I was
struck by the glee which came from such simple toys, (and relatively quiet to
boot), but more than that I was reminded of the story of the Little Drummer Boy
who came to play for the Baby Jesus on that cold winter’s night.
The story goes that he hears that the King of Kings had
been born, but had nothing to give as a present, so he gave the only thing he
had, the gift of a song. He played his drum for the newborn king singing,
“Come,
they told me, pa-rum pum pum pum
Our
newborn king to see, pa-rum pum pum pum
Our
finest gifts to bring, pa-rum pum pum pum
To
lay before the king, pa-rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
So
to honor him, pa-rum pum pum pum When we come.
Ba-by
Je-sus, pa-rum pum pum pum
I
am a poor boy too, pa-rum pum pum pum
I
have no gift to bring, pa-rum pum pum pum
That’s
fit to give a king, pa-rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall
I play for you, pa-rum pum pum pum On my drum?
Mary
nodded, pa-rum pum pum pum
The
ox and lamb kept time, pa-rum pum pum pum
I
played my drum for him, pa-rum pum pum pum
I
played my best for him, pa-rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then he smiled at me, pa-rum pum pum pum-- Me and my drum”
This Christmas what will you bring to the newborn King?
Your finest and your best? I would suggest that you bring the gift of your
heart, for that is all that God ever wanted. pa-rum pum pum pum!
